Mutilated Animals Found in Staten Island Park

NEW YORK (AP)  -- Visitors to a Staten Island's  Von Briesen Park stumbled on a grisly scene twice this week: a mutilated animal wrapped in a white sheet.

Carol D'Auria reports

Parks spokesman Phil Abramson said both animals were believed to be goats. He stresses that it's illegal to kill or harm any animals in parks.

The discovery has sparked speculation of ritual sacrifice or cult activity.

The Staten Island Advance says one resident was so upset after finding a carcass that she chanted prayers and sprinkled holy water on the ground.

ASPCA spokesman Joseph Pentangelo urged anyone with information to call his agency at 877-THE-ASPCA.
