NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- Police in Nassau are warning the public about an alleged pedophile on the loose.

Police identified the man as Irene Sorto Romero, 53, whose last known address was 299 Jackson St. in Hempstead.

Romero was arrested for the sexual assault of a 7-year-old girl in his Westbury apartment over a two-year period, police said.

Romero, who is missing a finger, was the boyfriend of the now 10-year-old girl's grandmother. Romero was arrested and disappeared after making bail. He was last seen about three weeks ago in Hempstead, police said.

Authorities fear that Romero may attack other children.

Crime Stoppers is asking anyone with information on Romero's whereabouts to call them at 1-800-244-TIPS.

A $2,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. All calls will remain confidential.
