Long Island Gym Teacher Gets 18 Years in Bartender Rape
|
RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP/1010 WINS) -- A Long Island gym teacher has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after admitting he raped a bartender.
Michael Wachholder pleaded guilty last month in Suffolk County Court in Riverhead. He admitted that he attacked the bartender at a Mount Sinai tavern last February.
Following his arrest, the 30-year-old Wachholder was placed on administrative leave from his teaching job in the Three Village school district.
Wachholder went into Secrets Lounge with another man shortly after the bar opened on the afternoon of Feb. 3 and engaged the bartender in conversation.
Police say the two men were there for about 20 minutes before the woman was attacked from behind as she set up a food area.
The bartender was struck in the head and knocked to the floor and then raped by Wachholder, police said.
No other customers were at the bar at the time of the attack.
The second man was not charged since an investigation determined he was not involved in the rape.
At the sentencing on Wednesday, Wacholder apologized to the victim and his family.
