Newark Elementary School Students Get New Threads

NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS)  -- Mornings have become a little easier for elementary school students in Newark.

Steve Sandberg Reports

On Monday, the district's 30,000 elementary school students were expected to show up to class wearing uniforms. Superintendent Clifford Janey unveiled the new policy earlier this year, but state statute required school officials to give parents at least three months' notice before implementing dress-code changes.

Guidelines for the uniforms have been set, but the specifics of the style and color of the plaid jumpers, polo shirts and khaki cargo pants kids are wearing were decided by principals, staff and parent groups at each school.

School officials hope the implementation of the uniforms will help students focus on their studies rather than pay attention to what other children are wearing.

The dress-code change has been met with some opposition with some older students thinking the uniforms rid them of their individuality.

However, Janey says the pros outweigh the cons in the uniform debate as the new threads will relieve peer pressure and enhance learning.

Parents also like the uniform policy saying it's a great money-saver.
