NEW YORK (AP) -- The body of a 16-year-old Queens girl who was apparently swept away by a strong current while swimming has been found.
The medical examiner's office identified the body as that of Tiara Coaxum. She was swimming last Friday with at least one friend in Rockaway Beach when she disappeared.
A passerby discovered her body on Wednesday nearly three miles away floating in the water under the Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge.
Officials have ruled her death an accidental drowning.
She and another 16-year-old girl became distressed while swimming. Lifeguards rushed into the water but were only able to pull one of the girls from the turbulent ocean swells.
The Coast Guard and police had searched unsuccessfully for the girl.
