Peekskill Man Burned Taking Gas from Car for Lawn Mower

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. (AP)  -- A man siphoning gasoline from a car to use in his lawn mower in the suburbs north of New York City has been burned.

Firefighters say the man was in a garage in Peekskill on Wednesday afternoon using an electric siphon to pull gas from the parked car. They say a spark from the electric pump ignited the gas fumes. They say flames engulfed the man and burned him over a good part of his body.

The man has been taken to a hospital.

The fire was confined to the garage. But the adjoining two-story home was damaged by smoke.

Firefighters say the man probably could have avoided triggering the flames if he had used a hose without an electric pump.
