Police: Slain Brooklyn Boy Not Intended Target

NEW YORK (AP)  -- Police say a 14-year-old boy gunned down in front of a Brooklyn apartment building does not appear to have been the intended target of the shooting.

Police say Mario Smith was fatally shot Tuesday night while standing with a group of youths in front of the building on Kingston Avenue when a man went into an adjacent building, came out with a gun and began shooting.

Police spokesman Paul J. Browne says it appears that an argument between two women across the street sparked the shooting. He says the man was aiming at the group Mario was with.

Family and friends held a vigil for the boy Wednesday on the street where he was killed.

Police say they are searching for a 23-year-old male suspect in the case.
