Port Authority Police Chief Position Eliminated

NEW YORK (AP)  -- The top cop job at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has been eliminated.

Executive director Chris Ward said in a memo Wednesday that the move ensures a single point of contact at the agency's police department.

A Port Authority spokesman wouldn't comment on what will happen to Chief of Police Christopher Trucillo. He has held the position since 2004.

Ward's memo says Police Superintendent Samuel J. Plumeri Jr. will now be the "single point of accountability.'' He is a civilian who oversees the department, while Trucillo was its top law enforcement officer.

The port authority oversees the region's three airports and owns the World Trade Center site. Ward says the organization needs to build ``a more appropriate structure reflective of these changing times.''
