Queens Teacher Accused of Affair with Teen Student Pleads Not Guilty
|
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Queens middle school teacher charged with the statutory rape of her 14-year-old student, pleaded not guilty Friday and was held on $100,000 bail.
Prosecutors say social studies teacher Melissa Weber, of West Babylon, had sex with the boy on at least seven occasions in a second floor classroom at MS/IS 8 in Jamaica. The pair had sex seven times between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. from Apr. 13 to May 14, prosecutors said.
Weber, 27, allegedly told the boy, "Don't tell anyone. I could get arrested and I could lose my teaching license."
The alleged affair came to light when the boy's mother, who is a member of the Parent Teacher Association, was tipped off by someone at the school.
Prosecutors said the mother checked her son's cell phone and found hundreds of contacts between him and Weber over the last two months.
One of the last text messages from Weber to the boy stated, "Erase your phone," prosecutors said.
Weber was arraigned Friday in Queens Criminal Court on charges of second-degree rape, sex abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, prosecutors said. The judge also issued an order of protection.
If convicted, Weber faces up to seven years in prison.
