NEW YORK (AP) -- Rachael Ray served chicken on whole wheat flatbread to kids at a lower Manhattan public school Monday to launch a partnership between her Yum-o! organization and the city Department of Education.
Stan Brooks reports
The menu that debuted at Public School/Intermediate School 89 was developed in consultation with the department and will be served in more than 1,600 public schools this Thursday.
``We are thrilled to be partnering with the Department of Education's Office of School Food to help get kids excited about the food they eat while embracing a healthier lifestyle,'' said Ray, the Food Network star and talk-show host.
She was joined by Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott, Sen. Kristin Gillibrand, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and school officials.
While the city has worked with other chefs, Ray is the highest-profile celebrity chef who has created a menu for the schools.
Yum-o! is Ray's nonprofit organization that promotes healthy relationships with food and cooking.
"You want good food to sound as bad for them as bad food," Ray said.
