Sewer Line Bursts at New Bronx Hall of Justice

NEW YORK (AP)  -- Authorities are working to fix a ruptured sewage line at the multimillion-dollar Bronx Hall of Justice that left prisoners and judges crying foul punishment.

Some bathrooms, courtrooms and prisoner cells were closed after raw sewage backed up at the new courthouse on East 161st Street on Wednesday.

Mark Daly, spokesman for the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, says the agency expects the entire building to be reopened later in the day. First, workers have to reach the rupture in a sewer line about 30 feet from the building.

Half the plumbing lines at the $421 million courthouse were shut down, but the building was open for legal proceedings.

Daly said repair crews were digging 12 feet underground after snaking a camera into the pipe to pinpoint the damage. During repairs, some of the women's bathrooms open on the building's east side were designated as men's rooms.

The seeping sewage was discovered Wednesday after people reported a stench in the building.
