Dr. Brian McDonough on Single Rooms in Hospitals

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- All it a bit of much needed luxury in health care.

According to a recent report in the JAMA, single rooms are becoming the trend in new hospitals and those that are improving.

But there are more reasons than luxury.

Studies have shown that being alone in a room can reduce the risk of infections, reduce medication errors and allow privacy for the patient, family and the physician. This news isn’t new.

Over a century ago, it was determined that single rooms were the way to go but due to costs, patients have often been relegated to rooms with as many as three other patients.

There is another benefit of the single patient room…private rooms are calmer and have lower noise levels, which helps keep blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate in check, along with improved pain control and sleep quality.
