NEW YORK (AP) -- A Greyhound bus' roof peeled off as it plowed into a highway overpass Friday, dropping debris onto terrified passengers and injuring six people, authorities said.
``All that we heard was a big rip coming from the front to the back,'' passenger William Tedeschi said. ``I thanked God I was alive _ I was so scared.''
The bus got wedged in an overpass on the Henry Hudson Parkway in the Bronx around 7:30 p.m., the Fire Department said. It was carrying 37 passengers from Springfield, Mass., to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan, Greyhound spokesman Dustin Clark said.
The driver told authorities he was unfamiliar with the parkway, Fire Department Battalion Chief John Sullivan said.
Five people suffered minor injuries, and one person's wounds were somewhat more serious, firefighters said. All were taken for medical treatment, Clark said. He did not know whether the driver was among them.
The company sent another bus to pick up the remaining passengers.
