Workers could be seen clearing the mess Wednesday morning near the Consumers Union building in Yonkers, N.Y.
Some cars got stuck at an exit ramp of the Saw Mill Parkway.
At a nearby office park, a worker wore shorts as he spread salt in the parking lot. It was 64 degrees.
The metropolitan area also suffered from power outages and flooding. High winds and heavy rains downed trees and utility poles.
Several homes and cars in Yonkers were damaged by falling debris late last night, police said. Tornado sightings were reported, but authorities say those sightings have not been confirmed.
"Possibly a tornado came through the city...the northwest section...it was just devastating...trees and wires down...the amount of hail was unbelievable," a Yonkers Fire Department lieutenant tells 1010 WINS.
National Weather Service Meteorologists from the New York City forecast office conducted a survey of the damage in Westchester and northern Nassau counties Wednesday and concluded the damage was caused by straight line winds likely resulting from a downburst associated with a supercell thunderstorm. Wind gusts in Yonkers were up to 75-80 miles an hour.
Metro-North used different tracks for its Hudson line trains because of a mud slide near the Greystone station.
Authorities said that downed power lines sparked several car fires and that many are still without power as a result of the storm.
About 21,000 customers lost power overnight in southern Westchester County. Long Island had about 5,320 customers lacking power.
About 7,800 customers in Westchester were still without power as of 4 p.m. Wednesday, most of them in Yonkers. Chris Olert, a spokesman for Consolidated Edison, said crews were working around the clock to restore power to the rest of the area.
According to PSE&G there are about 350 customers without power aacross the state.
Midtown Manhattan, just a few miles away, was unaffected by the summer storm.
