NEW YORK (AP)  -- Police officers and firefighters responding to a fire in a New York City apartment have found a woman apparently stabbed to death.

Police say the fire was reported early Sunday in Staten Island. They say firefighters put out the flames and then discovered the 43-year-old woman.

The woman had numerous stab wounds to her chest and neck area. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Fire marshals are trying to find the cause of the fire. The medical examiner's office is examining the woman's body.

No arrests have been made.
