Suffolk County Police Search for Hit-and-Run Driver in Christmas Crash that Killed Cyclist

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- Police on Long Island are asking the public for help in identifying a hit-and-run driver whose car struck and killed a bicyclist on Christmas night in Central Islip.

Mona Rivera reports

The front end of the car, possibly a Honda with "low wheels" may have been damaged in the accident, Suffolk County police said Monday.

Hector Rapalo, 39, was riding his bicycle north on Route 111 heading toward the intersection with Chestnut Street, when he was hit from behind, police said.

Rapalo suffered severe head injuries and died two days later at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. The car fled the scene, police said.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to call the Third Squad at 631-854-8352, or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.

All calls will remain confidential.
