Suspect Arrested in Baby-On-Doorstep Case

NEW YORK (AP)  -- Police have arrested a 31-year-old woman accused of abandoning her newborn daughter on a Queens family's doorstep on Mother's Day.

Prosecutors expect Hua Zheng will be arraigned by Wednesday on charges of reckless endangerment, child abandonment and endangering the welfare of a child. Prosecutors did not know whether she has an attorney.

The baby is in stable condition at Flushing Hospital.

Police say a Queens resident heard crying outside her door on Sunday. She found the infant wrapped in a blanket, alongside a diaper bag.

The city's safe haven law allows babies to be left within five days of birth at a police station, firehouse or hospital.
