Teen Faces Murder Charge in L.I. Jogger's Death
RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- A grand jury has upgraded charges against a teenager to vehicular homicide after police say he ran down two joggers, killing one and seriously injuring the other, while driving under the influence of marijuana and Xanax.
Mona Rivera reports
Shea Rosen, a 19-year-old from the exclusive village of Brookville on Long Island's ``Gold Coast,'' pleaded not guilty to a slew of new charges including a top homicide count of vehicular manslaughter.
Authorities say Rosen was driving his 2000 Dodge Durango south on busy Route 110 in Huntington on Nov. 6 when he slammed into Amanda Malloy, a 29-year-old elementary schoolteacher, and her companion, 32-year-old Vincent Saunders.
Malloy was killed and Saunders was seriously injured.
The pair, who trained together at a local karate school, were out for an evening jog when they were run over.
Prosecutors say Rosen was high on Xanax, a prescription medication, and marijuana at the time of the crash.
Malloy's friends and family looked on tearfully as Rosen entered his not guilty plea. "No sentence he gets will justify what he did," one supporter told 1010 WINS.
Rosen was being held in lieu of $1 million bond and is scheduled to appear again in court on January 7th.
Malloy was described by her sister-in-law as a physical fitness enthusiast who often competed in triathlons and was an expert in the martial arts.
``Her life was exercising,'' said Christine MacQuarrie, who also taught at Kennedy intermediate school. ``It is ironic that she died doing what she loved.''
