Teen in Critical Condition after Bear Mountain Fall

HIGHLANDS, N.Y. (AP)  -- A 16-year-old girl is in critical condition after falling nearly 30 feet at a swimming hole at a New York state park.

Police say Kelly Cortesi was with her mother at a pond at Bear Mountain State Park when she slipped off a cliff and landed on rocks on the water's edge. She was taken by helicopter to a medical center in Valhalla. Police say she has severe head injuries.

State Park Police Lt. David Love says several other people have been hurt at the pond known as Hell Hole where Cortesi fell on Sunday. He says swimming there is illegal and that signs warn people away. There are no trails leading to it.

Bear Mountain State Park is about 50 miles north of Manhattan in Putnam Valley.
