When the news stories come in from the wire services and the newsroom police radio crackles with the latest breaking news, Tom Offer's fingers go to work at his computer writing about some of the day's major happenings for the millions of 1010 WINS listeners. Tom says the focus is on keeping the stories interesting, easy to understand and most importantly to the point adding, "We shouldn't waste peoples' time." That is especially true in a city where everything is measured in a "New York minute!"
Tom, a born and bred Long Islander, has been with 1010 WINS since 1982 and is the morning drive news writer and part-time editor. He says it is important as a writer to bring to WINS listeners' stories that impact their lives whether they are from around the block or around the world. It's also not just violence and crime, but emphasis on issues as education, transportation and the like.
Tom kicked off his broadcast career at WFUV-FM at Fordham University in the Bronx, where he earned degrees in communications and political science and an M.B.A in marketing. Knowing that New York is the media capital, Tom decided to stay in the Big Apple and went on to news and public affairs positions at WOR Radio, Channel-9 Television and several suburban radio stations before joining the 1010 WINS news team.
For years WINS news writers have been honored with the "odd" sounding on-air phrase "portions written by..." Tom says knowing that people directly connect my name with what they hear on the radio presses me to do try to do better each and every day.
It's a unique experience to wake up New York, New Jersey and Connecticut and to work with a dedicated team of news "junkies" making the "All News All The Time" station America's top rated news radio leader.
