Empire State Building Marks World Diabetes Day

NEW YORK (AP)  -- The lights atop New York City's Empire State Building will be blue on Saturday night, in honor of World Diabetes Day.

The Art Deco skyscraper will join hundreds of world monuments -- including the London Eye Ferris wheel in London and Japan's Tokyo Tower -- sporting blue lights on Saturday.

The symbol for World Diabetes Day is a blue circle. The International Diabetes Federation says there will even be blue lights shining on Niagara Falls.

The nonprofit Lighthouse International says it will also light its Manhattan building blue to raise awareness of the nearly one million New Yorkers affected by diabetes.

Health officials estimate some 24 million Americans and millions worldwide also have the disease.
