N.J. to Homeowners: The Check's Not in the Mail Yet

TRENTON, N.J. (AP)  -- It may be a couple of weeks before many New Jerseyans find out when their property tax rebate checks are coming.

The state has already mailed out a first round of checks to the elderly, disabled and some low-income tenants.

A state Treasury Department spokesman said Thursday that other homeowners and renters will get checks sometime this fall, but will have to wait another week or two to find out exactly when.

Some of the checks will be smaller than last year, thanks to a budget crunch that forced cuts in the program.

Households earning $100,000 or less will get the same amount as last year. Those that earn between $100,000 and $150,000 will get one-third less than 2007. Households earning more than $150,000 will not receive checks this year.
