NEW YORK (AP) -- A man who was killed after being struck by an out-of-control taxicab in mid-Manhattan has been identified as a helicopter pilot for WABC-TV. His wife and a 7-year-old boy were injured as the cab ran onto a crowded sidewalk outside a popular restaurant.

Paul Smith, 60, was killed as he was leaving Docks Oyster Bar on 40th Street and Third Avenue on Sunday evening, WABC-TV said on its Web site Monday. It said Smith was an employee of Newscopter Seven, a subcontractor for the station.
The station said Smith's 55-year-old wife, Donna, suffered a broken leg. Police said the 7-year-old boy, who was not identified, had a broken arm. Both were hospitalized in stable condition, police said.
WABC-TV said that the Smiths has just finished a birthday dinner with friends and were standing outside the restaurant saying goodbye when the cab jumped the curb.
Smith, an experienced pilot, rarely appeared on the air, WABC-TV said. The exception was when a WNBC Channel 4 helicopter crashed several years ago.
The cab driver, who witnesses said was traveling fast, hit a sidewalk planter and then the Smiths and the boy. He was not charged; police say they believe it was an accident.
