Suspicious Bus Rider Forces Port Authority Closure

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- A man who caused a brief bomb scare at a bus terminal in one of the city's busiest areas on Monday by carrying a suspicious bag onto a bus and refusing to get off was arrested and was being questioned, police said.

The scare forced the closing of the Port Authority Bus Terminal's south wing, one of two in the sprawling midtown Manhattan terminal, to inbound and outbound buses and pedestrians at around 3 p.m. The terminal reopened about 90 minutes later.

The 28-year-old man boarded a Greyhound bus in Scranton, Pa., refused to get off when it arrived in New York and made some kind of threat, police said.

After taking the man into custody, officers found that his bag contained clothing and food, police said. No charges were immediately filed.

During the scare, streets around the terminal, which is near several multiplex movie theaters, the Madame Tussaud's wax museum and B.B. King's blues club, were closed as police, fire, bomb squad and Emergency Medical Service units swarmed the area.

Passengers were directed from the terminal to a spot a few blocks away, where buses were lined up to pick them up. Most were unfazed.

``It's not earthshaking, but it is an inconvenience,'' said Staats Abrams, from Montclair, N.J. ``I have our three Irish setters waiting for me at home.''
