Police Skeptical of Motorist's Report He Was Shot While Driving
ELMSFORD, N.Y. (AP/1010 WINS) -- Police said Friday they are skeptical of a motorist's claim that a gunshot went through his car's back window and into his shoulder while he was driving on the Saw Mill River Parkway.
The report had raised fears of a sniper but Westchester County police Commissioner Thomas Belfiore said, ``There is absolutely no risk to the traveling public.''
Belfiore said witnesses saw the man's white Audi, with the back window already shattered, before the time he claimed he was shot.
"We have no evidence that it occurred on the Saw Mill River Parkway and certainly we have evidence that it did not occur as reported by the victim,'' Belfiore said.
The man's report of a shooting prompted police to close the highway for hours Thursday night to search for a possible sniper and other evidence. On Friday, two more reports of shots fired, apparently unfounded, closed the highway again and locked down three school districts.
The motorist, whose name has not been made public, drove off the highway into Elmsford with a shoulder wound and asked bystanders to call 911. He told police a bullet blew out the car's rear window and struck him around 6 p.m. as he drove between the Eastview and Route 119 exits on the Saw Mill.
The man was taken to the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla and was still there Friday. Police said his wound was not life-threatening.
Belfiore said police had not decided what, if any, charges to bring against the man. He said the man was scheduled to appear in court in Elmsford on Monday on an unrelated matter.
