Police Release Sketch of Suspect in Dentist Slaying
NEW YORK (AP) -- Police have released a sketch of the man they believe shot and killed an orthodontist at a Queens playground, and they're offering a reward to speed his arrest.
The sketch shows a heavyset white man with close-cropped hair and a long, pointed nose. Police say the suspect is around 50 years old and around 5-foot-8.
A reward of $41,000 is being offered for information leading to the man's arrest and conviction in the death of Doctor Daniel Malakov, who was killed October 28th while taking his daughter to see his ex-wife. The couple had been embroiled in a bitter custody dispute.
As the child went to greet her mother, a gunman wearing a dark jacket approached and fired three rounds into Malakov's chest.
Malakov's ex-wife, Dr. Mazoltuv Borukhova, testified in Queens Family Court Monday about her broken marriage and the custody battle she had lost to her spouse over their 5-year-old daughter, Michelle.
The hearing was aimed at determining who gets custody of the couple's girl now that Malakov is dead. The child was placed in foster care following the Oct. 28 slaying of her father. There have been no arrests in the killing.
A lawyer who represented the 34-year-old shooting victim in his divorce says his client's family denies Borukhova's accusations of abuse.
