PILESGROVE TOWNSHIP, N.J (1010 WINS) -- State police on Sunday identified the Buena Township man whose illegal pass on a Salem County highway caused a crash that killed himself and three others.
Sgt. Stephen Jones, a state police spokesman, said the driver was Richard A. Carrelli.
The 40-year-old was eastbound on Route 40 in Pilesgrove Township when, around 11:15 a.m. Saturday, he tried to pass in a no passing zone, Jones said.
His truck sideswiped another pickup driven by Kelly Bonselaar, 22, of Elmer.
It then collided head-on with the car driven by Tatum Loatman, 27, of Millville.
Loatman and two passengers — Barbara Loatman, 69, and Hartly Loatman, 75, also of Millville — were killed.
Three other passengers in that car — Brook Loatman, 17, of Glassboro, and Emon Loatman, 14, and Harlon Loatman, 13, both of Millville — all suffered multiple injuries and were flown by helicopter to Cooper University Hospital in Camden.
All three were in critical condition Saturday night, and Jones said Sunday morning that state police hadn't been notified of changes in their condition.
Bonselaar was being treated for unspecified injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
