NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) -- Authorities in New Brunswick are now investigating the desecration of graves in a local Jewish cemetery as a bias crime.
1010 WINS AUDIO: Steve Sandberg reports
A New Brunswick police spokesman initially said anti-Semitism wasn't being considered as a possible factor after nearly 500 headstones were found toppled Sunday morning at the Poile Zedek Cemetery. But Sgt. Richard Rowe now says he misspoke.
City police and the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office are investigating.
The Sunday desecration came only days after an initial 17 headstones were toppled at the cemetery.
