NYC Considers Longer School Days, Summer classes

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City education officials are considering a longer school day or having classes in the summer. The experiment will be tried in 10 to 15 elementary and middle schools in September as a joint effort by the city education department and After-School Corp., said Lucy Friedman, president of the nonprofit corporation.
The idea to extend the school day to 6 p.m. and the summer months has drawn criticism from the teachers union. United Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten said the program would divert money from the regular school day.
A spokeswoman for Chancellor Joel Klein said the city was always looking for ways to improve education.
