Officers Checking On Cabbies' Etiquette

NEW YORK (AP)  -- New York City taxi drivers had better mind their manners: Officers are going undercover to check up on cabbies' courtesy.

The city Taxi & Limousine Commission says its officers and police are posing as passengers to make sure drivers aren't violating rules against refusing credit cards, talking on cell phones and general rudeness. Violators may face fines, and repeat offenses could lead to license suspensions.

TLC Chairman Matthew Daus says agency officials want to "remind drivers the passenger is always right.''

Taxi Workers Alliance executive director Bhairavi Desai says the city is "persecuting drivers'' while shrugging off problems they face. The alliance is a drivers' advocacy group.
