NEW YORK -- The private police force at Co-op City in the Bronx is on strike. Unionized members of the private police walked out after contract talks broke down early this morning.
Key sticking points in negotiations between management of Co-op City and the Co-op City Police Benevolent Association are pension benefits and staffing levels.
Co-Op City is comprised of 35 buildings and has about 55-thousand residents. The area also has four shopping centers with more than 100 retail stores.
Union spokesman Steve Mangione says there are 81 officers and 75 lobby attendants in the association.
He says the private police force has the authority to patrol the cooperative, as well as make arrests.
The N-Y-P-D has assigned police to the area.
