100 Animals Removed From Filthy Syosset House

SYOSSET, N.Y. (AP)  -- Dozens of dogs, guinea pigs, flying squirrels, cats, birds and ferrets were removed from a filthy Syosset home Wednesday afternoon.

The Nassau SPCA said the home was not fit to be lived in by animals or people. The animals were found living in their own feces and dirt. SPCA workers filled nearly six vans with more than 100 animals and put a fence around the house.

Nassau County Police say the woman who lives at the home, Angelica Mazzarella, 53, was a recluse. She had been brought to Syosset Hospital, where she was declared mentally incapable.

Neighbors say the stench that came from the house was unbearable.

Police say their investigation began in December when a Jericho veterinarian notified police that a woman kept bringing in animals that were sick and dying.
