D.A.: Contractor Took Money from Bronx Homeowners

NEW YORK (AP)  -- A Long Island man has been indicted by a Bronx grand jury for allegedly taking more than $142,000 to make repairs or begin home improvement jobs for Bronx homeowners, but never doing the work.

The Bronx district attorney said John Arceri, 45, is indicted on grand larceny, scheming to defraud and petty larceny.

His attorney said most of the customers have gotten refunds, and that his construction business has closed.

The Bronx D.A. said Arceri stole from 22 Bronx homeowners between June 1 and Nov. 30, 2006. The D.A. said Arceri insisted on large down payments. He then would disappear for months wiithout doing any work.

The New York City Department of Consumer Affairs was flooded with complaints and notified the district attorney.

Arceri faces up to 15 years in prison.
