New Britain Men Charged in Assaults of Infant, Teenager

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP)  -- Two New Britain men were arrested Thursday on several counts of sexual assault involving a 3-month girl, a 14-year-old boy and police say there may be more victims.

Harold Spurling, 39, and Jeffrey Brisson, 29, who shared an apartment on Washington Street, also were charged with risk of injury, tampering with a search warrant and interfering with a search warrant.

Police served the warrant at the apartment, acting on a tip that the men were molesting children and using the Internet to promote their activities. They forced their way in after Spurling and Brisson refused them entrance.

Once in, police discovered the infant and noticed a computer had begun an encryption process, which is used to mask certain material. The process was stopped by New Britain forensic computer analysts.

"The encryption process hides the material so it can only be accessed with a password,'' New Britain Sgt. Darren Pearson said.

Once the process was stopped, authorities said they found icons consistent with child pornography and a video of Brisson sexually assaulting the infant. Police said they also learned that the boy had been sexually assaulted by both suspects.

The suspects knew the parents of the victims, police said. The infant girl was examined at a local hospital and returned to her mother, whom police say was likely unaware of the assaults.

Both men were arraigned in New Britain Superior Court and are due back in court Feb. 21. Brisson is being held on a $3 million bond and Spurling on $2 million, police said.
