Dr. Brian McDonough on H.I.V.

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- It’s more than two decades since H.I.V. reached the nation’s consciousness and despite the devastating nature of the illness, there have been many major advances.

In medications and when once there was no hope, there are many who receive treatment and live productive lives.

Clearly, it is important to get effective treatment, but there is another factor that is becoming more apparent as we learn more about H.I.V. It depends on the strain of the virus.

Some strains of H.I.V. kill people faster than others. For instance, researchers at Hopkins recently isolated a strain of the virus found largely in Asia that kills those it infects several years before other strains do.

It is becoming clear that treatment for H.I.V. will ultimately be tailored for various strains. With clearer understanding will come better treatments.
