Dr. Brian McDonough on Atherosclerosis

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- Perhaps you have heard of the apple versus pear theory or weight and heart disease? The basic premise is that people who carry their weight in their bellies are more likely to have heart disease and problems than those who have it distributed through other parts of their body.

If in fact this is the case, why?

Just what is it about fat in the abdomen that leads to this difference?

Researchers from the University of Michigan publishing their work in the journal Circulation think they are on to something.

They studied mice (which react like people) and report that inflammation originating from belly fat cells leads to Atherosclerosis (or hardening of the arteries), while inflammation in another type of fat does not.

Atherosclerosis is a key factor in heart disease and stroke. If this proves true in humans it could add a very important step to treatment. Beyond losing weight and that belly fat, doctors could treat the underlying inflammation.
