Dr. Brian McDonough on Medication Side Effects

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- When we take prescription medications, most of us take them to treat a specific problem, but we rarely think about side effects unless a problem pops up. But if you really think about it, every medication has one or more side effects.

The drugs are working in our bodies…not in a vacuum.

Let me give you an example: anti-psychotic medications are one class of drugs used to treat conditions like Bipolar Disorder, and they are very effective at their job. But, there is a side effect.

They often cause substantial weight gain.

In fact, the problem is so bad that experts at Johns Hopkins say this is a major reason why young people skip their medications and get into trouble.

Think about it, teenagers are often between a rock and a hard spot. If they take the medicine, they gain weight. If they don’t take the medicine, they have trouble controlling emotions and behavior.

The side effect can be a major reason why the drug is stopped. Of course, this is why doctors and patients need to communicate. They need to discuss these issues.
