NEW YORK (AP) -- The president of the United Federation of Teachers has proposed a new system for holding public school teachers accountable for their students' achievements.
UFT President Randi Weingarten, in an address before the Association for a Better New York on Thursday, said the union's accountability system would balance test scores with a host of other factors, such as the richness of a school's curriculum, its safety and funding.
The UFT president said the union began exploring its own accountability system after the Department of Education began assigning grades to schools to measure their performance, angering many educators and parents.
She said UFT's proposal ``looks at what makes a school a place where every parent wants to send their child and every teacher wants to work.''
