RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- A Long Island man has been sentenced to 25 years to life for the stabbing death of his wife. The killing was overheard by a 911 operator after the couple's 10-year-old daughter called authorities pleading for help.
Elden MacFarlane of Bay Shore was convicted last month of second-degree murder. A jury in Suffolk County Court in Riverhead rejected defense claims that MacFarlane should not be held criminally responsible because of mental illness.
Jurors heard the couple arguing, the victim screaming and their daughter crying on a 911 tape recorded in the moments surrounding the attack. Prosecutors said he stabbed Regina MacFarlane out of anger over a looming divorce.
