Hallucinogenic Plant, Salvia Divinorum, to Be Illegal in Suffolk
RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- The Suffolk County Legislature wanted to nip it in the bud so they approved a law outlawing the sale and possession of a hallucinogenic plant that has been gaining popularity in the Internet.
Web sites have been touting the mind-blowing powers of Salvia Divinorum. Eight states have already placed restrictions on salvia, and 16 others are considering a ban.
The Suffolk County Legislature voted 17-0 on Tuesday to make Salvia Divinorum illegal.
The plant is generally smoked but can also be chewed or made into a tea. Unlike hallucinogenic LSD or PCP, salvia's effects last for a shorter time.
No known deaths have been attributed to salvia's use, but it was listed as a factor in one Delaware teen's suicide two years ago.
