NEW YORK (AP) -- A burglar erroneously released from prison last month was back in custody Friday after turning himself in to police, officials said.
Raul DeJesus, 37, had served just over two years of a three-year sentence for two counts of second-degree attempted burglary when he was released Feb. 25 from Midstate Correctional Facility in central New York, said Erik Kriss, spokesman for the state Department of Correctional Services.
DeJesus was supposed to be turned over to the New York City Department of Corrections because he had a pending court appearance in Manhattan on other burglary charges.
``It appears that the securing order may have been missed by our staff, which is why he was released to parole instead,'' Kriss said. DeJesus, the subject of several media reports, turned himself in to city police at 12:30 a.m. Friday. The parole division had issued a warrant and a city warrant squad was looking for him.
Stephen Morello, spokesman for city corrections, said DeJesus was in custody Friday. He wasn't sure about his next court date.
State prison officials are investigating why he was turned loose last month. Kriss said they have no data on similar cases ``because it's so infrequent.''
