Dr. Brian McDonough on Drunk Driving

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- On the surface, it looks like great idea, especially we are trying to limit the number of accidents caused by drunk drivers, and I don’t think anyone would argue with that idea.

According to an article in the journal Traffic Death Prevention, and, no I don’t read this on a regular basis, a listener told me about it. Breath-testing devices that prevent a vehicle from starting if there driver’s blood alcohol level exceeds a preset limit can cut down D.W.I. problems.

The stats are quite good.

First offenders with “interlock” devices installed on their car were 60% less likely to have a repeat offense that those who did not use the devices. The researchers looked at the records of 1,461 first-time D.W.I. offenders in New Mexico who had interlocks installed in their vehicles and compared them with 17,562 first-time offenders in the state who didn’t use the devices.

Only about 10% of arrested D.W.I.’s nationally are ordered a period of interlock-controlled driving and surprisingly only four states mandate interlocks for first D.W.I. offenses: New Mexico, Louisiana, Arizona and Illinois.
