NORTH BELLPORT, N.Y. (AP) -- A child was shot in the face in a Long Island home Monday afternoon.
Suffolk County police say 11-year-old Jefrey Langhorn was sitting at the kitchen table when a bullet traveled into the North Bellport home and hit him in the face. Police believe the bullet came from the backyard around 1:30 p.m.
The family rushed Langhorn to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition with a spinal injury.
Police say authorities had to remove 15 pit bulls from the home to investigate the shooting. They will conduct a separate investigation on why there were over a dozen pit bulls in the home. The dogs were taken to Brookhaven Animal Shelter and all appear to be healthy.
Investigators believe a total of three shots were fired from outside the house.
It's unclear who fired the shots and why. No one has been arrested.
