NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A volunteer firefighter was killed Tuesday morning on Long Island after a car crossed lanes and struck his motorcyle.
Police say 33-year-old Jason Curry was driving on Route 25A in Fort Salonga when he crossed over the double yellow line and struck Charles Varese, 24, as he was riding a motorcycle.
Varese, who comes from a family of firefighters, was pronounced dead at the scene. Varese was a member of the Northport Volunteer Fire Department along with his mother and brother. The victim's father is the chief of the department.
Curry was taken to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center with minor injuries.
Curry has been arrested for driving while ability impaired by drugs and will be arrainged Wednesday.
