St. Patrick's Mass to Memorialize Construction Workers

NEW YORK (AP)  -- Construction workers killed on the job in New York City are to be remembered at St. Patrick's Cathedral Monday as the city sharpens its focus on the dangers of their work.

Trade unions and construction managers have arranged for a Mass to memorialize the 13 workers killed since April 2007. Six died when a crane toppled in midtown Manhattan last month. The collapse also killed a tourist.

The Rev. Brian Jordan says the crane accident killed more city construction union members than any other event since 61 died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. He will officiate at Monday's Mass.

The crane collapse and other recent accidents have spotlighted construction perils. This week, the city Buildings Commissioner resigned, and her interim replacement ordered a review of dangerous construction practices.
