Dr. Brian McDonough on Hip Osteoarthritis

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- Knee and hip osteoarthritis affects millions of Americans.

Most who live in pain due in part to confusion about what therapies are most effective.

That’s why a group called The Osteoarthritis Research Society International got together to come up with some sort of standardized approach without getting too detailed. The group looked at treatments presently available and broke them into three groups: non-pharmacologic, pharmacologic (or medication based) and surgical.

One of the biggest developments was a look at NSAIDS, drugs that are commonly used as over-the-counter prescription treatments, but also with potential side effects.

The committee found these are best used in the short term…not as a long term solution and people who are routinely taking them over-the-counter need to talk with their doctors.
