Dr. Brian McDonough on Teens and STDs

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- I am still getting feedback at the office from last week’s dramatic statement by the C.D.C. that one in four teens between the ages of fourteen and nineteen has been exposed to a sexually transmitted disease (or S.T.D.). I am not surprised.

The statistics are startling. But it is an important message that needed to get out.

Decades ago, an S.T.D. was a source of embarrassment, but most could be treated effectively with antibiotics. But today there are numerous viruses including Herpes, Hepatitis B and C, and of course, H.I.V., that are present. Human Papilloma Virus (or H.P.V) may be the most common viral S.T.D. although there are hopes that the vaccine (Gardasil) may help cut those numbers down.

Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and even Syphilis are infections that if not treated rapidly can cause long term effect…even sterility. There is no pretty way to sugar coat it…the facts are there and educating teens about the potential risks are crucial.
