NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- If you have experienced jet lag, you don’t need me to tell you about the annoying symptoms. By definition, the problem occurs when the body clock is affected by rapid travel across three or more time zones.
There are a variety of symptoms including delayed sleep onset, poor performance at physical or mental tasks, irritability, fatigue and headache.
The symptoms also seem to affect older people more than those who are younger.
Eastward journeys are worse than western.
An area of the brain, commonly referred to as the “body clock” is located in what is called “the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus” controls temperature and hormonal levels and is sensitive to these changes.
One of the best tips I have seen is advising people who are staying at a location for less than three days to remain on their home time and maintain eating and sleeping patterns they are used to. Bright light and gently exercise are also potential aids.
