Heartless Pranksters Paint Brooklyn Neighborhood Turtle

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- A box turtle that's become somewhat of an icon in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn has become the victim of a cruel prank.

1010 WINS AUDIO: Terry Sheridan Reports

Myrtle, as the turtle is known, was discovered last week painted a bright shade of orange.  Neighbors blame a group of construction workers who they say have no heart and nothing better to do.

The turtle was first spotted sporting its new color in the backyard of a area development under construction.

The alleged incident is the latest drama to center around the site, which has long been a headache for the folks in Williamsburg.  The residents have made a number of complaints about the work being done there - saying it has caused cracks to appear in the walls of their homes and is to blame for downed cable and phone lines.

The turtle painting has also been the subject of much outrage on "The Gowanus Lounge," a popular blog that covers events and happenings in Brooklyn, and with residents in general.

The incident hasn't seemed to slow Myrtle though, she's returned to her old backyard stomping grounds.  A resident tried to clean her up, but didn't have much success.
