NEW YORK (AP) -- A day after Congressman Vito Fossella admitted to having an affair that produced a child, his hometown newspaper said the Republican "is finished'' and needs to resign.
The Staten Island Advance on Friday said Fossella "forfeited the trust'' of his supporters and "the right to represent the people of Staten Island in Congress.''
Fossella's love child admission on Thursday came after he was arrested and accused of driving drunk outside Washington last week.
"Given all the damning information,'' Fossella should step down immediately,'' the paper stated.
Fossella has said he has no immediate plans to resign. He is the only Republican member of Congress from New York City.
